Heavy Cream vs. Whipping Cream: What Makes a Difference?

Heavy cream and whipped cream are both cream products which made from cow's milk that are quite comparable, though they are used for different purposes such as heavy cream for main ingredient and whipping cream for mostly for toppings.  Their biggest distinction is in fat content.

Two Dairy Products With A High Fat Content

Heavy cream and whipping cream are standardized mixes of milk and milk fat, which means the fat is emulsified and fully incorporated into the milk so that it does not separate.

Both are made by adding certain quantities of milk fat to milk. As a result, the fundamental distinction between them is the quantity of fat in each.

According to the Food and Drug Administration's labeling guidelines (FDA) , heavy cream contains at least 36% milk fat. It is also referred as heavy whipping cream.

Whipping cream, on the other hand, has a somewhat lower milk fat content (30-36%). It is also known as light whipping cream.

Aside from the fat level, heavy cream and whipped cream have nearly identical nutritional profiles. Their calorie imbalance is primarily due to this fat variation.

Can They Be Used Alternately In The Kitchen?

The short and sweet answer is, Yes!

You may choose to use them interchangeably in terms of flavor. Nevertheless, whichever one you should use ultimately relies on the consistency or thickness of your dish.

For example, you can create whipped cream with any kind. Heavy cream, on the other hand, produces a stiffer whipped cream that can keep peaks, whereas whipping cream produces a smoother and fluffier version that can not hold peaks as stiffly.

You may make your homemade heavy cream in the following way if you don't have whipping cream or heavy cream at home:

  1. In a saucepan, melt 1/3 cup (73 grams) butter.
  2. Mix with 2/3 cup (160 mL) full milk.
  3. Stir until thoroughly blended over medium-low heat.
